Located in San Francisco’s South of Market District, Folsom Family Apartments integrates family housing within a varied commercial and light industrial neighborhood. The four-story, 50-unit apartment building maintains an urban scale along Folsom Street and steps down its massing towards the main entry on Columbia Square. The ground floor provides a lobby area, community room, laundry facilities and garage. The featured element in the design is a central courtyard, opening to the south, which serves as a shared open space and garden to be used by the tenants. The tenants of this project, sponsored by Mercy Charities Housing of California, are comprised of families earning less than 60% of household income for San Francisco residents. These are primarily working families who have previously lived in overcrowded conditions or who have paid an extremely high proportion of their income to rent.
