John Muir Elementary School is a wood framed building designed in a half-timbered style by James W. Plachek in 1913 and completed in 1916. The school and site have been designated landmarks by the Landmarks Preservation Commission of the City of Berkeley. The auditorium and library are of special historical significance.

The addition of the two classrooms is complementary to the existing building. The vocabulary of the addition was faithful to the historical significance of John Muir School and was approved by the Berkeley Architectural Heritage. A new concrete patio between the new Classrooms formalized the access to the school from the playground.
